    A method and apparatus for determining if a packet is a duplicate packet are disclosed. The method includes determining if a field of a duplicate packet map (DPM) indicates the packet is the duplicate packet (step 730). The determination is made using a packet summary value (PSV) corresponding to the packet (steps 710 and 720). The apparatus (a network device, for example) includes a duplicate packet map (DPM), which can be used to make the foregoing determination.
