The invention provides a method for inputting Chinese phrases into a handheld device in phonetic input mode, and the handheld device has plural keys, each of which is mapped with one or more phonetic alphabets and the method comprises the steps of: using a key pressed by a user to update an input string; if the key and all the other ones before it and behind any separators in the input string can not compose any legal phonetic syllable, inserting a separator before the key in the input string; for each part of the input string separated by the separator, prompting phonetic syllable for the user to select; and for each user-selected phonetic syllable, prompting Chinese characters for the user to select. |
