La,Gd)PO 4∶RE 3+ (RE=Eu or Tb) phosphors were prepared by co-precipitation method. It was found that the IR spectra of LaPO 4 and GdPO 4 were quite similar, the difference was that both stretching frequencies and bending frequencies of GdPO 4 were higher than those of LaPO 4. The VUV excitation intensity of (La,Gd)PO 4∶RE 3+ is enhanced with the increasing of Gd 3+ content, implying the intermediate role of Gd 3+ in energy transfer from host absorption band to RE 3+.
